Atop the Taj Mahal

AGRA, India — The Mughal Empire left its mark on the Taj Mahal, literally.

Atop the main dome of the 17th century memorial built by Emperor Shah Jahan sits a finial with a design of bulbous figures and what appears to be a crescent moon pointing heavenward.

It was, I later learned, a tamga — a stamp or seal — associated with the Mughal Empire, which ruled from 1526 to 1858 and at its peak ruled over the Indian subcontinent and Afghanistan.
