KATHMANDU, Nepal — Stepping off my Agni Air flight around the Himalayas — and Mount Everest — I breathed a sigh of relief and made my way back to my rented room at Hotel Peace Night for a bit of decompression.
After the sight of the mountain range on the Nepal-Tibet border from 30,000 feet, walking back through the tourist-oriented neighborhood of Thamel made me think of what it might have been like to return to Earth after having been in outer space.
I could hear the normal din of street commerce again, but in a different light. Things seemed a little brighter, a bit purer and life was good. I passed a travel agency storefront with the largest words on its sign being, “New York.” As far as I could tell, there was no reason for the name of my hometown on this shop’s façade, yet I couldn’t help but smile.
In one way or another, we are all travelers.
