Flags Fly Above Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Whether religious in nature, decorative, commercial or patriotic, the flags that fly above Kathmandu are plentiful.

What I had recognized as Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags hung in windows on a small scale, while streamers and non-religious flags criss-crossed above the bustling city streets.

Not as common were instances of the Nepalese flag, although sometimes they were put on display along with saris across storefronts.

They were everywhere, I noticed, and brought with them small doses of joy.
