Hasta la Vista, Varanasi

VARANASI, India — My time in Varanasi was like no other place on Earth I had ever visited and offered me a spectacular glimpse of a world so different than my own.

I didn’t get to bathe in the Ganga, as I had imagined, I suffered Varanasi’s variant of “Delhi belly” and I was talked into a ghat-side massage I didn’t really want.

Other than those minor hiccups, witnessing the puja rituals in the river, the burning ghat and a boat ride on the holiest river in Hinduism were definitely highlights.

Next, I would head north on yet another overnight train — they served double-duty as lodging and transportation. And on my way to catch my ride to Gorakhpur, I encountered a cow who may have been thinking about a vacation.

I might have been the only person who noticed.
