Sweets on Kolkata’s Streets

Indian sweets provided a much-needed boost on Kolkata’s streets.

KOLKATA, India — Hungry from wandering the streets of Kolkata — from the Fairlawn Hotel to Shakespeare Sarani, and from the Marble Palace to Victoria Memorial Hall — I was famished.

23431662673_9508fba60a_nDucking into a small local bakery, I found a glass case full of wildly colored treats. There were no black-and-white cookies or croissants, but rather a cornucopia of sweets made with ghee, milk, cashews, almonds. I asked about a few of them and selected two, one of which was flavored with rose water.

Though I wasn’t in note-taking mode then, I’d now love any help in identifying my snacks.

Next time, I would do well to pick up some of the small green bananas that street vendors sold on what seemed like every corner. Live and learn!
