‘What Matters Is the Ride. Not the Bike.’

Bicycle technician Ranggapanji speaks about his passion and the seriousness of the mission of building bike wheels in this video by my good friend Josh in Jakarta.

Having built my own mountain bike wheels in my more athletic days living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I can certainly attest to the trust you put into a balance of thin metal wires tensioned between an aluminum rim shod in knobby tires.

Although I spent a good deal of time obsessing over mountain bike gear, Ranggapanji speaks a few words of wisdom that resonated within me — not just with respect to two-wheeled transit, but in the overall picture. He says, “What matters is the ride. Not the bike.”

Too true.
