En Route

Air travel never gets old.

Sure, no one actually enjoys waiting in airports, standing at security checkpoints or sitting on the tarmac. But the actual point of takeoff — when the wheels leave the ground and you’re pointed what feels like 45 degrees into the heavens — that is something else entirely.

Think too much about what’s actually holding us all up or look out the window for too long, and it can be a bit nerve-wracking.

But you still look.

This image is from my flight home from Austin, Texas, where I decided to go visit my good friend Kathryn. The decision to leave New York for a few days came easily after having found myself suddenly — but not unexpectedly — out of work. My employer was on track to lose $1 billion this year, if news reports were to be believed.

But this impetus was much larger than a week-long leave of absence.

There are far more places to see.
